Hell’s Gate National Park, near Lake Naivasha, is one of the few national parks in Kenya where you can explore on foot or by bicycle. Towering cliffs, volcanic rock towers, steam vents and a deep gorge create a dramatic landscape that is said to have inspired scenes in The Lion King.
Landscapes and highlights
The park takes its name from the narrow break in the cliffs once used by early explorers. Fischer’s Tower and Central Tower are volcanic columns that rise from the valley floor, and the Hell’s Gate Gorge offers a guided walk between steep, water-carved walls. Geothermal activity in the area feeds the nearby Olkaria power station and its natural hot springs.
Wildlife
Cycling or walking through the park, you are likely to see zebras, giraffes, buffalo, gazelles and warthogs, while the cliffs are home to birds of prey including vultures and eagles.
