Amboseli National Park is famous for two things: large, relaxed elephant herds and postcard views of Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest mountain, rising above the plains just across the border in Tanzania. Elephants of Amboseli
Amboseli is one of the best places in Africa to watch elephants up close. Family groups move between the dusty plains and the permanent swamps fed by underground water from Kilimanjaro, and some of the park’s bulls carry impressive tusks. Long-running research in the park means these elephants are among the most studied in the world.
Wildlife and landscapes
Beyond elephants, Amboseli is home to lions, cheetahs, buffalo, giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, hippos and a wide variety of birdlife around the swamps. The park’s open terrain makes wildlife easy to spot, and the changing light on Kilimanjaro creates memorable scenes at sunrise and sunset.

Best time to visit
The dry seasons from June to October and from January to February offer the best game viewing, as animals gather near water. Kilimanjaro is usually clearest early in the morning and in the late afternoon, so plan your game drives around those hours.
Getting there
Amboseli is roughly four to five hours by road from Nairobi, making it ideal for a weekend safari, and it combines easily with Tsavo or the Maasai Mara. Scheduled flights from Nairobi also serve the park’s airstrip.
